Milorganite Slow-Release Lawn Fertilizer

Milorganite is a slow-release, low-burn fertilizer designed for easy, low-maintenance lawn care. Rather than following a rigid calendar, Milorganite built its feeding schedule around a simple “holiday” system, timing applications roughly every 8–10 weeks during the grass-growing season so homeowners can remember when to feed their lawn without checking a calendar.

For most lawns, one 32-lb bag covers 2,500 square feet, and four applications a year is the standard routine. Cool-season lawns (bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass) get fed around Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving, with that last “dormant feeding” timed just before the ground freezes to set the lawn up for a greener spring. Warm-season lawns (Bermuda, St. Augustine, zoysia, and similar grasses) follow a slightly different rhythm — Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and early October — since these grasses have a different growing and dormancy cycle. A few states (Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Florida) have their own regulated rates due to local fertilizer ordinances.

New lawns get a heavier initial dose — double the standard rate — worked into the top couple inches of soil before seeding, sodding, or sprigging, then transition to the regular seasonal schedule once established. Milorganite can also be mixed directly with grass seed for overseeding, letting you fertilize and spread seed in one pass.

One of its standout practical features: it doesn’t need to be watered in immediately. Because it releases nutrients as soil microbes gradually break it down, Milorganite can sit on the lawn until conditions are right, and it stores indefinitely if kept dry — making it a forgiving, flexible option for lawn care.
